___Released in 1996, the Nintendo 64 was Nintendo's third generation of home arcade console. Both Sega (Saturn) and Sony (Playstation) had already released 64-bit systems. The console was, like the Super Nintendo, a top-loading system. However, a major redesign of the controller was done. The directional pad was still there but a thumb-manipulated joystick pad was also included along with several new action buttons. The overall design very much gives the effect of a bat. The game library was, again, populated by many old favorites such as Mario and Link. A large amount of first person shooters (my personal favorite being Goldeneye) were released and became some of the more popular N64 games. Nintendo's market share was not as great as it had been with either of it's previous systems, mostly due to the strong showing of the first Sony console, the Playstation. Sega, once again, failed to grab a large share of the market. The system was replaced by the Gamecube in 2001.
